Even though 2018 has already begun, it’s not too late to set goals and start the year with a meaningful plan to move the needle in whatever facets of your life you see the need to adjust.


“True North” can be defined as determining your most important roles and most important goals in your life. This varies from person to person, but sticking to the most important 3 to 5 categories will keep you from biting off more than you can chew. This could come also in the form of a new goal or redefining an existing goal or role.


Setting aside time to reflect and assess is vital in identifying your “True North”. The second and equally important piece of setting yourself up for success is to identify the process and decide how much time and effort you can commit to your goal on and on going basis. This piece of the process goes back to the old saying “fail to plan and you plan to fail”.


This is where we use S.M.A.R.T. goals. In order to know if you’re hitting milestones along the way toward your big picture goals, you should make goals:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Relevant
  • Time-bound

Documenting your big picture goal as well as milestones along the way is key for maintaining your dedication and ensuring you’re steering your efforts in the right direction. How you do that can be anything from templates like in the example link above to using sticky notes and white boards. As long as you’re able to literally check off the boxes and record your progress.


When I was personally looking at redefining my objectives for my family goals, self defense, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and business in 2018, I wanted to ensure that I was planning according to a realistic perspective of my existing time commitments and obligations. When you’re making your plan to accomplish your goal, make sure to visualize what your time line feels like as you’re working towards it. How will each day and each week feel on this new plan? This is actually the “A” of Smart but, it is worth mention that this piece is all too often overlooked in the planning phase.


The most important piece is taking action toward your goals. None of the other stuff matters if you don’t make concrete steps in the right direction. Take those steps and watch as small and large goals become realities in your life!
