Finding and sharing a perspective of gratitude can be a life-changing and paradigm-shifting revelation. It’s all too easy to get caught up keeping up with the latest technology, fashion, or whatever trend you choose and that can be doubly true during the pressures of the holiday season.
Count your blessings… Literally. Count ‘em. When you’re having a hard day, take a moment and challenge yourself to list 10 things that you are grateful for. Stepping back and re-framing the gifts in your life can immediately make the day feel better and it will also remind you why you do what you do and who you do it for in your life. It only takes a moment. Sometimes I’ve done it in my car before heading into the house after a long day. When I say out loud that I’m thankful for my family, our health, our home, the great people in my life, and a career that allows me to share my passion with others, it makes space for a shift that I always appreciate.
The next step is to share that gratitude with the people that you care about and this can be more difficult than you might think. If you don’t already do this, try it! Put a little bit of your feelings out there and express that you are thankful to have someone in your life. Being appreciated is one of the best feelings and it’s a keystone in feeling fulfilled in life. So, tell someone when they make your life a brighter. It might make their day!
Change your language. If you listen, you’ll hear people say “I have to [fill in the blank]. We should instead say “I get to [fill in the blank]. You get to go to the grocery store, you get to spend time with your kids, you get to go to work, you get to go to the gym. Changing that one word of the thought changes the entire meaning. Start putting this to practice right away.
Each of these concepts are small but they can drastically change the arc of your day every day. Be an optimist and find things large and small alike to be grateful for! If you don’t believe me, try it for a week and see if you feel the results.
